Piccinini, chairman and majority
shareholder of Save
Mart Super markets, was honored
recently by the Western
States Council of the UFCW at its
2009 Person of the Year dinner.
All of Save Mart’s stores and subsidiaries are 100 percent union. “Bob Piccinini takes the interests of his employees into account in every aspect of his business,” UFCW 8 President Jacques Loveall said.
“He respects the people who work for him and he respects the fact that they are entitled to Union representation.”
Piccinini has worked extensively with the UFCW to develop an interest-based approach to negotiations and problem solving.
“The results have benefited both Union members and the company,” President Loveall said.
Many Save Mart employees share President Loveall’s high opinions of their company’s CEO.
“Bob is a fair man,” said Cheryl Shear, a Save Mar t worker. “I love working at Save Mar t. I feel secure knowing I’m going to have a job tomorrow.
And my Union benefits are the reason I can have what I have today.”
Kathy Huff, another Save Mart member, added: “He is to me a giving man who really thinks about his employees. Bob supplied us with a whole meal for Christmas Eve just to thank us for being his employees.”
Huff said she respects the company’s community-oriented approach to business.
“Bob is not just about him,” she said. “Bob is about all of us: his employees and the community. And that’s what I love about working at Save Mart, that the company really gives back to the community.
”William T. McDonough, the UFCW International Union’s Executive Vice President and Director of Collective Bargaining, said Save Mart's 100 percent Union status contributes to the success of Union contracts in Northern California.
He also praised Piccinini as a man ofintegrity who values the people who work in the stores. “He clearly understands that one of the reasons for his success is treating his employees right,” McDonough said.
“He believes that paying them well andhaving a union contract enhances his whole business plan.”
“We have an excellent workingrelationship with Save Mart,” President Loveall said, “and we look forward to continuing that relationship in the future.”
